Taking Note

The team at Rite in the Rain has been “defying mother nature since 1916.”

Staying in business for 106 years is no joke. To last that long as an organization, you must have a bias toward action.

Throughout history, great leaders and thinkers have taken notes.

Leonardo da Vinci authored around 30 different scientific journals and notebooks during the early 1500’s.

Note taking is not a new or novel idea. Writing our thoughts down has existed for centuries.

Earlier in the 20th century, Jerry Darling needed a notebook that could perform.

So he did what any guy would do with a bias toward action. He built his own paper that could withstand the tough Pacific Northwest environment. Rite in the Rain was created.

Turns out, a lot of people work in tough environments. The demand for tough products that work in tough environments continues today.

But…

What about the demand for quality note taking?

What about the skill of gathering your thoughts?

What about your bias toward action?

What about the idea of always taking the next step?

Think about the last meeting you were in.

Think about what specific actions came out of that meeting.

If you did not take great notes, likely no great actions occurred.

If you are in a meeting that you are not taking notes (or subsequent actions), should you even be in the meeting to begin with?

Sweat, rain, snow, mud, sleet, sunshine… you name it, I have worked in it.

I have multiple notebooks. I take notes for my workouts. I take notes for my site meetings. I take notes for my conference calls. I take notes for ideas, themes, or wisdom that resonates. I take notes for document reviews.

Bottom line, taking notes on paper helps me to think better.

Taking notes helps me to discover the next step.

Taking notes helps me to separate the signal from the noise.

Taking notes helps me to benchmark my assumptions.

Taking notes helps me to understand consequences.

Taking notes helps me to have a bias toward action.

What kind of notes are you taking?
